WOW Machinima series

WOW MACHINIMA projects center on online communities, particularly on exchanges, political conflicts, and censorship between mainland China and Taiwan players. With “Intrusion,” I began exploring the intersection of digital space and geopolitical issues. In my latest project, I engage with Chinese players to portray an online game environment rich in contradictions, conflicts, and close relationships. I aim to build an ethnography of this digital realm.

Through the creative utilization of Machinima, I aim to employ it as a tool for online ethnography, historical writing, and fieldwork. Machinima provides an avenue for reshaping digital history, leveraging the contrast between players (“the controlled”) and game officials (“the controllers”). By harnessing its non-subjective, non-grand narrative framework, Machinima challenges digital colonial empires and external narratives, embodying a defiant stance in the post-Internet era.
